The children had a special treat in March - the Silly Safari came
to school! The presenter did an excellent job captivating the children,
and keeping both children and adults laughing throughout the presentation.
He explained the qualities and requirements of most of the animal
kingdoms at an age-appropriate level. The children had the opportunity to
touch many of the animals he brought. He showed the children his Great
Dane dog, a small fox, a bull frog from Africa, a baby owl, a snake, the largest
species of cock roaches, a turtle, and a rabbit. The children had a
wonderful time.

Recipes and Trail Mix and Granola, Oh My!
The five day children in Room 4 have been honing their reading and
fractions skills through advanced Practical Life food prep. The last few
weeks we have been making Trail Mix and Granola, and we have more fun recipes
to come. After washing their hands, the children read the recipe, measure
the correct amount of each ingredient, and then mix everything together.
With the granola, the children had the opportunity to measure wet ingredients
too, such as honey, vanilla, and butter. The children do this
independently, measuring everything by themselves – this provides the
opportunity for older reading students to help younger not-yet reading
students. The children have requested I include the recipes so they can
make these treats at home. The recipes are for one to two servings.
Trail Mix
1/3 cup cheerios
1/3 cup pretzels
1 Tbs. raisins
1 tsp. crasins
½ tsp. chocolate chips
Mix together and enjoy!
Granola
½ cup oats
1 tsp. raisons
1 tsp. crasins
1/8 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. vanilla
2 Tbs. honey
1 (scant) Tbs. butter
Mix together and eat with yogurt. (You can bake if you like but we did
not).

Following a Recipe
The five day children from Room 4 made Banana Bread this week for the upcoming Dad's Night. We have been learning about fractions and measuring in cups, and today we learned how to follow a recipe.
- The children read the directions on the recipe and measured the correct amounts of dry and wet ingredients.
- They took turns mashing bananas, which provided the opportunity for working as a team and learning how to be independent.
- Then the children took turns mixing, and then spooning the batter into a bread pan and muffin tins.
What a treat eating our homemade muffins the next day!
The children are excited to eat the bread with their Dads on Thursday.
