A Busy Week in Room 4

Several works have been quite popular recently, including turtle scrubbing, which is part of our study of reptiles this month.  

To scrub a turtle:

1. the child needs to put on an apron

2. set up towels, a tub and bucket

3. then fill a pitcher with water

4. carefully carry the pitcher of water to the tub

5. the child uses soap and a sponge or brush to scrub the turtle clean

6.  to finish, the child needs to empty the bucket of water

7. dry all the materials

8. put them away

This work helps develop and lengthen concentration, as well as refining motor skills and offering opportunities to move while learning.  It also provides the child with the skills to successfully clean and care for his or her environment independently.

Another favorite has been using scissors to cut out a turtle outline, and then attaching the arms and legs with brads.  The children have enjoyed the opportunity to carefully use scissors and a hole punch.  

 

Tracing letters and numbers was a new work this week and an instant favorite.  The excitement about tracing extended to writing on dry erase and chalk boards, and also to sounding out words with the movable alphabet and then transferring the words to paper.  We’re going to try tracing and writing short stories next week.
