Creative Experiences is a great name for our Wednesday afternoon art class where children are provided a variety of art supplies for them to create beautiful works of art. It's all about the process!

While some ideas provided for the children have a sample so they can see an end product, other materials provide open-ended experiences.

Creative Experiences is a fun class where children can explore "messy" art, using materials such as glitter glue, finger-paints, paint rollers, splatter painting and more.  It's also fun to explore with different qualities of materials. Which watercolor brand is the brightest, and does watercolor paper really make a difference? These are just some ideas shared with the class.

Each class begins with a snack and reading a book about children and art.  Some sessions include children’s books about artists.  Last week, the book, Ish, by Peter H. Reynolds—was read and throughout the class the children were describing their own ish creations.

If your child loves art (especially messy art), but you don't have the heart for it, we would love to have him/her join us for our next 6 week session!

WELCOME MRS. FRANCO!

Please help us in welcoming Mrs. Aliya Franco and her family to our Montessori community!

Mrs. Franco will be working with Mrs. Turner in Early Childhood Room 3. Aliya has been assisting in Montessori classrooms since her teenage years. She comes to us from sunny Key West, Florida!

Winter Creative Experiences

Back by popular demand, another session of Creative Experiences is meeting on Wednesday afternoons in room 4.  Last week we began our class with snack and reading Art--a fun story about a boy named Art, who likes to create art.

During class time, the children worked with watercolors, glitter glue, self-portraits, finger paints, chalk drawings on black paper, tempera paints at the easel, collaging, and fingerprint snow globe paintings.

We had a great time making messes and creating many one of a kind artistic treasures.

Montessori Math

Here is a snapshot of some of the Early Childhood Montessori math materials, developed by Maria Montessori.

Children learn to identify the numerals, correctly count the quantities, and then match the quantities to the numerals – taught in Cards and Counters.  The 45 Layout shows visually and proportionally the first four place values (units, tens, hundreds, & thousands).  Using the fraction cones, children explore how two parts, three parts, or four parts can make one whole cone.  Again matching quantity to numeral, the Tens Boards with Beads explore the sequential order of the numerals 1-100, show the visual quantity which the numerals represent, and help teach how to read the numerals, i.e. “thirty-five.”  The Hundred Board provides another approach in learning to order and read the numerals 1-100.  Variations of the Hundred Board provide a deeper understanding of the order of the numbers and their place value from 1-100.  Using the Squaring Chains, children practice counting in groups of 2, 3, 4…etc. to 10; i.e. a concrete explanation of skip counting and squaring numbers.

Montessori’s math curriculum is incrementally broken down and concretely presented to teach underlying mathematical concepts, which instill the tools for future success in mathematics.
